A Look At Silent Film Actress Stacia Napierkowska
I’m absolutely enchanted by these photos of French silent film actress Stacia Napierkowska. Best known for her portrayal as Marfa Koutiloff in Louis Feuillade’s 1915 silent film serial Les Vampires – particularly episode 2, ‘The Ring That Kills‘, dancing as a vampire bat, she was a talented dancer and actress, as well as having also tried her hand at directing.
And in 1913, her dancing was so provocative as to get her arrested in New York City. An article from the New York Times attributes some pretty scathing quotes from Napierkowska about the USA upon her return to France. The full article from the Times can be viewed online here – ‘Paris Dancer Dislikes US‘, April 27th, 1913.
Napierkowska also starred as Queen Antinea in Jacques Feyder’s 1921 L’Atlantide (also known as Missing Husbands, Lost Atlantis, Queen of Atlantis and Die Loreley der Sahara), which is currently available on DVD and on my list to check out.
